Supreme Court concerned about the decline of the family system.
Comment that the concept of Vasudhaika Kutumbhu is being ignored
Comments during the investigation into family disputes
Concerns over the increasing number of single-parent families
The Supreme Court has expressed concern that the Indian family system is deteriorating. The court expressed regret that we, who believe in the concept of Vasudhaika Kutambayam, are not able to stay with our own family members. It commented that this trend is leading to single-parent families. A woman from Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh has filed a petition seeking an order to send her elder son out of the house.
The petition was heard by a bench of Justice Pankaj Mittal and Justice SVN Bhatti. The court said that there was no evidence to suggest that the son had insulted his mother or interfered in her life. The court said that the father cannot be the sole owner of the property and the son also has a share in it. The bench was of the opinion that there was no need to take drastic measures such as sending the son out of the house.
Kallu Mal and Santola Devi, a couple from Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, have three sons and two daughters. However, the relationship between the sons and their parents is not good. In 2017, they approached the local family court seeking maintenance from their sons… but it ordered the parents to pay Rs. 8,000 per month. In this process, a property dispute broke out between the eldest son and his parents. While this was going on… Kallu Mal died. With that, Santola Devi approached the Supreme Court against her eldest son.
During the hearing of her petition, the court made key comments on the family system. It stated that we all believe in the concept of Vasudhaika Kutumbakam, but we are failing to maintain family unity. The Supreme Court expressed concern that the concept of family is disappearing and we are approaching a system of one person, one family.
