Southeast Asian countries Myanmar and Thailand were shaken by a major earthquake today. The earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale caused huge buildings to collapse. Details of the loss of life in Myanmar are not yet known. 43 people are believed to be trapped in the rubble of a building that collapsed in the Thai capital Bangkok.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the earthquake. He said that he wishes all the people trapped in the earthquake to be safe. He revealed that India is ready to provide necessary assistance in relief efforts.
Prime Minister Modi instructed the Ministry of External Affairs to consult with the earthquake-affected countries on relief efforts.
Meanwhile, Myanmar was hit by two consecutive earthquakes. The two earthquakes were recorded to have occurred within a span of 12 minutes. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7, while the second earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4. A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Thailand. Earthquakes of 7.3 magnitude were also felt in some parts of Bangladesh.
The Myanmar earthquake was felt in many parts of India. Mild tremors were felt in Kolkata, Meghalaya, and Imphal. A 4.0 magnitude tremor was felt in East Garo Hills of Meghalaya.
