Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi criticized the Narendra Modi government on Thursday regarding the renaming of Durbar and Ashok Halls at Rashtrapati Bhavan, asserting that the notion of “shahenshah (king)” still persists in India. “There is no concept of Durbar but there is a concept of Shahenshah,” she remarked. President Droupadi Murmu recently announced
.. Two important halls where various ceremonies are held in Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi have been renamed. The President’s Secretariat has announced that the name of the Durbar Hall will be changed to ‘Ganatantra Mandapam’ and the name of Ashok Hall will be changed to ‘Ashok Mandapam’. A statement issued on Thursday said that the names are being changed to reflect Indian cultural values. President Draupadi Murmu revealed that a decision has been taken to this effect. The office of the President of India has explained that the residence of the ‘Rashtrapati Bhavan’ is a symbol of the country and efforts are being made to make it more accessible to the people.
Along with national awards, many important ceremonies are held in ‘Durbar Hall’. The term ‘Darbar’ reflects the kings, courts and assemblies of the British period. The term lost its relevance after the country became a republic. That is why the Rashtrapati Bhavan was converted into ‘Ganatantra Mandapam’ instead of Durbar.
And ‘Ashok Hall’ was used as a ‘Ballroom’ during the British period. That is, parties were held in this very large room. The word ‘Ashoka’ means ‘free from all suffering’ or ‘no sorrow’. Similarly, the unity expressed by Emperor Ashoka is also a symbol of peaceful coexistence. But in the name ‘Ashok Hall’ the word hall is in English. The Rashtrapati Bhavan explained that the name is being changed to ‘Ashoka Mandapam’ without any English signs to indicate uniformity in language.
Congress Party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the decision taken by Rashtrapati Bhavan on the change of names. Criticized the government. Mandi said that the concept of ‘Darbar’ does not exist now, but the concept of emperor still exists today.
